JUNE 6, 1944

On June 6, 1944, Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy (France) to open the way to Germany from the West.  Victory in the Normandy campaign would come at a terrible cost.  That day, 359 Canadian soldiers were killed, another 715 were wounded.  Total Allied casualties on D-Day numbered more than 10,000.

June 6, 2019, marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.  During the day, please remember the sacrifice of all men and women who gave their lives in the fight for our freedom.  Although their boot prints in the sand have long washed away, their imprint on history will endure forever.  To all those who have served our country and have lost their lives in the line of duty, thank you.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PINK

Wednesday April 10th is International Day of Pink.  On this day, we stand united, with communities across the country, and around the world, in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop ALL forms of bullying.

The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when two straight high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied.  The two students intervened, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic & transphobic bullying.  They decided to purchase pink shirts and a few days later got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity.  The result was an entire school that rallied together by all wearing pink and showed their solidarity against LGBTQ-based discrimination - #StopBullyingNow

The message was clear:  anyone can bully, anyone can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop bullying.

On Wednesday April 10th, staff and students are encouraged to wear PINK (students encouraged to wear pink tops instead of white golf shirt).  Together let's #StopBullyingNow

CANADIAN AND WORLD STUDIES

On Wednesday, Grade 12 students from the Canadian and World Studies Department attended an invitation from MP Mendicino to attend an event on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The student delegation from Dante consisted of Grade 12 Law and History students. When they arrived in Ottawa, they completed a tour of "West Bock" in the House of Commons where they experienced "Question Period" in the spectator room.  The students also spent time in the "Room of Remembrance" observing quietly all the names of soldiers who died defending democracy and freedom.

The students were also asked to attend a question and answer session in the "Committee Room" in the west block of Parliament.  They had an opportunity to ask questions to three Members of Parliament.

This experience allowed students to better understand government, leadership and Civic responsibility.  We are very proud of our delegates from Dante and we thank Mr. Rees for accompanying the group.
