ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Orange shirt day calls upon every Canadian to wear an orange shirt in a spirit of healing and reconciliation.  Today at Dante staff and students are commemorating this event by wearing an orange shirt or donning an orange ribbon.

This seemingly small gesture symbolically recognizes the issue of residential school, honours the survivors and victims of those schools and makes an effort to ensure that every child matters.

Thank you to all staff and students who have participated in this event this year.

Special thank you to the FNMI teachers and the English department for their help!

JR. BOYS' SOCCER

In soccer action yesterday, the Jr. Boys’ soccer team travelled to Centennial Part to face their nemesis Michael Power, the B team. Dante started the first half very slowly and fell behind 1-0 but before the half ended, Dante tied the game. At the start of the second half, the coaches made some key changes and as a result Dante controlled the half and outscored Michael Power B. The game ended Dante 4 and

The coaches would like to congratulate the boys for a well-played game and impressive win. The team is reminded that, next week Tuesday, they will play against Michael Power, the A team. Make sure you do not forget your soccer jersey, soccer shoes and shin guards for next week’s Tuesday’s match.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was created to inform all Canadians about the horrors that occurred in the Indian Residential Schools.

Residential schools were government sponsored religious school that were meant to make Indigenous children more European-Canadian.  The first school opened in 1831 and the last residential school closed in 1996.

It is estimated that over 6,000 Indigenous children died at these schools.  Children died from disease and starvation.  Children were isolated from their families and forced to abandon their Indigenous identity.

The TRC hopes to guide and inspire Aboriginal people and Canadians in a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships that are based on mutual understanding and respect.

Please join us in wearing an orange shirt on Friday or wear the orange ribbon provided for you in your homeroom classes.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Yesterday you may have been asking yourself why an orange shirt?  Orange shirt day grew out of Phyllis's story.  Phyllis, a 6 year old in Williams Lake, B.C., was given a brand new orange shirt to wear by her grandmother for her first day at St. Joseph's Mission.  Having new clothes like a brand new shirt would have been a luxury of Phyllis.  Upon arriving at her new school, her brand new shirt was taken away.

On Friday, students and teachers are invited to wear an orange shirt as an acknowledgement of the plight of  the plight of Indigenous children in the residential school system.  On Friday, you will be provided an orange ribbon to wear on this day as a symbol of our commitment to healing and reconciliation.
