NATIONAL ABORIGINAL MONTH

JUNE is National Aboriginal Month. In this month, we would like to honour all the indigenous women that have been murdered and have been missing for the past decade. According to the report by the RCMP, 1,017 women and girls identified as Indigenous were murdered between 1980 and 2012- a homicide rate roughly 4.5 times higher than all other women in Canada. Unfortunately, police in Canada do not consistently record the Indigenous Identity of victims of crime. Statistics Canada reports that in 2009, for example, police records failed to note whether the victims of crime were Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal in 384 out of 610 homicides. Some victims of crime are being inaccurately identified as non-Aboriginal because police have not had proper training on why accurate identification is important and how it's to be determined. With this, we call on the government to provide better police training and services when dealing with Indigenous people in order to better their relationship with the Aboriginal communities.

Thanks

VIRTUE OF CHARITY

Good Morning Monarchs. On May 18, a major landslide hit the town of Salgar in Antioquia, Colombia. At least 78 people died in the disaster, making it one of the deadliest single event disasters in Colombia. Please send your prayers to the lives affected and the families and persons who are struggling to cope with the disaster.

As you may know, this school year is dedicated to the virtue of Charity. Please help support families in Colombia affected by the landslide by donating any amount of money. We will be taking names of those who have donated as a sign of your participation to the Catholic calling for Charity. We will be visiting Period 4 classes to collect any monetary donations. All proceeds will go into assisting the families and persons who have been distraught by this tragedy. May our gentle prayers touch all those afflicted.

Thanks

GRADE 11 STUDENTS INFORMATIVE BOOTH OF DRINKING AND DRIVING

The booth will be in the caf on Thursday during all 3 lunches. Please tell your students to stop by. There will be free mocktails, brochures, prizes etc... As summer is fast approaching I think it's important for our students to be reminded of the consequences of drinking and driving.

Thanks for your support!
