NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLANCE AGAINST WOMEN

This coming Sunday, we remember the 14 women murdered on December 6, 1989 at Ecole Polytechnique by a gunman in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation. These individuals were killed simply because they were women. As we recall what has come to be known as the Montreal Massacre, we are called to remember that violence against women continues to be part of our present.

In 1991, December 6th was designated the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On this day, we remember the women murdered and recommit to ensuring their deaths were not in vain. As we mourn their deaths, as well as the too many women and girls murdered or abused since then, we need to continue to work for women's equality and for policies that lead to equity among women.

Canada is still not a safe country for all women, with more than 50 per cent likely to experience violence sometime in their lives, usually before they are 25. For some women, those most marginalized, these risks are even greater. Societal and structural policies and programs continue to harm single mothers, women with disabilities, indigenous and immigrant women.

The entire month of December represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society, to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. Finally, it is a month during which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Please visit the Canadian & World Studies showcase in the main hallway created in honour of the women who died and to learn more about what you can do to help eliminate violence against women and girls.

Ms. Katzikowski would like to extend a warm thank you to
Ms. DiBiase-Petrungaro and Mr. Vukman for helping to create this meaningful and powerful showcase for students and staff.

Please, take a pledge to help end the violence.

ME TO WE

Hey Dante have you heard? Today is Universal Children’s Day. This special day for children began December 14th 1954 when the United Nations recommended that all countries around the world institute a day which is dedicated to the welfare of the children of the world.  Today, November 20th, marks the day on which the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. Thus the 20th of November was chosen to be the day to celebrate the child.

Nearly 25 years ago, the world made a promise to children that we would do everything in our power to protect and promote their rights to survive and thrive, to learn and grow,
to make their voices heard and to reach their full potential.

However, even with the efforts to strive for a better future, there are many children whose rights are still being violated and freedoms are being repressed.  Many children are deprived of their rights and the benefits of development that we enjoy in Canada.  The only way to meet these challenges head on is to find new ways of thinking and new ways of doing.

There is much to celebrate as we mark the 25th anniversary of the UN. declaration, from declining infant mortality to rising school enrolment.  This historic milestone must also serve as an urgent reminder that much remains to be done. Too many children still do not enjoy their full rights on par with their peers. As Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated:

"The one thing all children have in common is their rights. Every child has the right to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate and to be heard. "

So Dante take a moment today to think of the children around the world who have no voice. And Be the Change Dante.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

An Announcement from the Canadian and World Studies Department:

As we begin Veteran’s week, let us reflect on Remembrance Day.  Remembrance Day is a special time to reflect on those who have lost their lives in military service and to be thankful to our Veterans, young and old alike.

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Ypres in Belgium during the First World War.  On April 22, 1915 Germans introduced poison gas, a terrible new weapon.  Despite the suffocating thick clouds of yellow-green chlorine gas, the Canadian troops held on against all odds until reinforcements arrived.  Our Canadian soldiers had begun to build a remarkable reputation for skill and valour on the battlefield.   It came at a steep cost as many lives were lost.

Lest we forget.

VISIT FROM YORK UNIVERSITY

York University will be visiting Dante on November 19th during all three lunches in the Library? Potential Grads interested in York should attend.
