DANTE SCARF SELLING BLITZ

Hey Dante!

Student Council will be selling the scarves once again in the cafeteria during all lunches. We will be selling the scarves for $20 if you don't have your Casual Day Year Pass and $17 if you do have the pass. For $20, you will receive a Dante Spirit Scarf, a free Casual Day Year Pass if you don't already have a free picture with Santa, and another gift with purchase while quantities last!

VARSITY BOYS' SOCCER

Last Friday, the Varsity Boys' Soccer Team, consisting of:

Jason Alvarado; Garnett Graham; Christian Romero; Cristian Rosario; Mateo Restrepo; Tiron Dryden; Tory Dryden; Andres Samaniego; Kevin Ferreira; Jordan Pereira; Leonardo Lopes; Lucas Valenga and Reginald Laryea participated in the 6th Annual Marc Garneau Indoor Six Aside Soccer Tournament with 16 teams entering. Dante won two championships, in 2008 and 2009, Mr. Aldea and Mr. Turco knew that this year would be number three. The boys' won their round robin games by outscoring their opponents, in four games, by a margin of 23 goals to 0. In the semi final game, Dante faced their nemesis Neil McNeil, who won the championship last year. They won a tough match 3-2. With only 20 min. rest, Dante faced Vaughan Collegiate who were also undefeated in the finals. Once again the boys worked their magic and out scored their opponent by a score of 3-0. As was predicted by Mr. Aldea and Mr. Turco, Dante came out the winners. Dante has won three championships in the past six years. The MVP award, for the entire tournament was awarded to Reginald Laryea, who was presented with a soccer ball. Mr. Aldea and Mr. Turco would like to congratulate the entire team for their sportsmanship and hard work and long 12 hours day. The championship banner will be sent to Dante. Each player received a gold medal. If you see any of these students make sure you congratulate them. Congratulations Dante, you make us proud.

Dante's Annual Christmas Spirit Week is nearly here! Just a heads up on the exciting events planned for next week!

Friday December 19 is the most awaited Annual Christmas Showcase! Wear a Red or Green Shirt with Uniform pants and shoes on this day as well! Throughout Christmas Spirit Week we will be having Music in the Cafeteria during all lunches and you can wear any of our Dante Spirit Wear!

CASUAL DAY

Today is a Casual Day! Students who are in casual clothing that don't have a year pass must buy a day pass for $2 or will be sent home. ATTENTION  GRADE 12 Students!!

This year's graduation prom will be held on Thursday May 14th 2015  at  The Terrace Banquet and Event Centre.

In order for us to secure this location we must make a deposit .... and require YOU to secure YOUR spot by making a deposit.. to US.

The prom committee is asking grade 12 students who want to attend this year's prom to make a first deposit of $40.

This will guarantee you AND 1 guest, each a seat.

We will be collecting the  $40  ...during the lunches.... in the cafeteria....... from November 18th until the 20th.

The size of hall we choose will be directly related to the number of deposits received.

If you do NOT provide a deposit at this time, we can NOT guarantee seats available at a later time.

POPPY CAMPAIGN AT DANTE

The Department of Canadian & World Studies is set to begin the Poppy Campaign at Dante. The Poppy Campaign will begin on Wednesday, November 5 to Monday, November 10, 2014.

Students will be visiting Period 1 classes during the Poppy Campaign and asking Dante students for a donation to receive their poppy which everyone will wear at the Remembrance Day assembly.

The poppy is

• A symbol of Remembrance and hope
• Worn by millions of people
• Red because of the natural colour of field poppies

Wearing a poppy

• is a personal choice
• reflects individual and personal memories
• is appreciated by those it helps

Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion's most important programs. The money raised from poppy sales provides direct assistance for ex-service people in financial distress, as well as funding for medical appliances and research, home services, care facilities, and numerous other purposes.

Students will receive their Poppy on Remembrance Day.

WE SCARE HUNGER

Did you know that 1 in 12 Canadians who visited a Food Bank last year were turned away because of lack of food.

We Scare Hunger runs until November 3, 2014. A food collection bin is located at the main entrance area of each campus.

We kindly ask Students and teachers to support We Scare Hunger. This is a social justice tradition at Dante.

All donations will be given to the North York Harvest Food Bank, which distributes food to smaller establishments in this community.

JOHN TORY IS ELECTED MAYOR BY THE PEOPLE OF TORONTO

Last week, Dante students cast their Student Vote ballots for the City of Toronto elections for the Eglinton-Lawrence Riding.
 
The results for the Student Vote election were:

Candidate - Josh Colle - won as Councillor for Ward 15

Candidate - Doug Ford - was elected as the Mayor of Toronto

Interestingly, the 250 Toronto schools which took part in Student Vote also voted Doug Ford as Mayor of Toronto.

FALL FEST SOCCER GAME

If you were wondering about the promised soccer game during Fall Fest, we unfortunately had to cancel due to the muddy field and limited space in the gym. HALLOWEEN SPIRIT DAY

Hey Dante! Are you ready for Halloween?! I know I am! If not, get ready for our Halloween Spirit Day this Friday, October 31st! Students AND Teachers will be allowed to wear a costume for the entire day, provided that it is appropriate: no masks, weapons, extreme exposure, etc. If you do not wish to wear a costume, you will also be allowed to wear an orange or black shirt WITH uniform pants. Period 1 will be a pumpkin-carving contest. Every participating homeroom class will compete against each other to carve the most clever and dazzling pumpkin using only the pumpkin by itself. Homeroom teachers will be responsible for bringing in their own pumpkin as well as any necessary tools for carving. The class that carves the best pumpkin will receive a free breakfast from yours truly, Student Council. We need all participating Homeroom classes by this Thursday! Period 3 will be a pumpkin pie-eating contest in the cafeteria during all lunches! We will be posting sign up sheets in the cafeteria to anyone who would like to participate. The last day to sign up will be this Thursday! The winner will receive a coupon for our 40th anniversary line of  Spirit Wear! Period 4 will be a costume contest held in the cafeteria. We will be calling down one student from each Homeroom class and we will choose the best costume from each grade. The winner will receive a gift card to Yorkdale!

JUNIOR BOYS' SOCCER

In Jr. Boys’ soccer playoff action yesterday, the team made a valid effort to be victorious but could not generate any offence and as a result lost their quarter final match against Basil by a score of 2-0. The coaches, Aldea, Galati, Sampogna, and Turco would like to congratulate all the students on the team for a great season and great sportsmanship. JUNIOR BOYS' SOCCER

Yesterday, the first playoff round began. Our Jr. Boys’ soccer team faced the third place north division Henry Carr.  Without knowing what to expect, our boys out hustled, out worked, and controlled the game from the start of the match. Our boys built a 2-0 lead into the second half. With motivational speeches from the coaches, the boys came out in the second half and scored three more goals. The final score was Dante 5, Henry Carr 0. Scoring for Dante was Tommy De Souza with one, Nicolas Rosario with one, Dylan Palma with one and Kevin Ferreira with two goals. The coaches would like to congratulate the players for a very impressive win.  Our next match will be played this week. You are reminded to bring your soccer gear for our next game that may be played tomorrow Thursday. Make sure you have your soccer equipment with you for tomorrow.


          The grade 10 students on the team must see Mr. Galati today after school in room 302 for a quick meeting. All players must attend this meeting in room 302.

JUNIOR BOYS' SOCCER

In yesterday’s Jr. Boys’ soccer action, Dante out hustled and out played Merton. The team worked hard and scored first to lead the game 1-0 until the half. In the second half, the team continued to out play Merton and scored two more goals to win the match 3-0. Scoring for Dante was Kevin Ferreira and Leonardo Lopes with two goals. The coaches would once again want to congratulate the team for the win. The team finished 2nd in their division with a record of 5 wins and 1 lose. The playoffs start next week Tuesday. The players are reminded to bring their soccer equipment for next week’s playoff game. Go Dante Go!!

JUNIOR BOYS' SOCCER

The Jr. Boys’ soccer team redeemed themselves from last week’s lose  with an impressive 3-1 win against Romero yesterday. The players came out in full force and took an early 1-0 lead into the second half. At the start of the second half, Dante built the lead to 2-0 but Romero would not give up and cut the lead in half with 4 min. to play in the game. As Romero continued to press, Dante got a quick break and scored the third  goal to seal the victory. Scoring for Dante was Nicolas Lopez, Alex Costa, and Dylan Palma. The coaches would like to congratulate all the players for a big win. The final season game is Thursday Oct. 16 at Dante’s field against Merton

UNIVERSITY APPLICATION PROCESS

Attention all grade 12 students planning to apply to University.   The University application process will begin soon and you need to be informed about your choices!!

In Junior Boys Soccer action yesterday, Dante played a superior Michael Power team. Bruised and determined, we tied the game after an early lead by the other team. Unfortunately, we could not hold them back and ultimately lost 3-1. Scoring for Dante was Kevin Ferriera.

APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING

From the Co-op Department:
 Grade 12 students who are considering APPRENTICESHIP as a post-secondary option are invited to attend an information session on Thursday  October 16th  at    9 am      in the auditorium.

Opportunities for students to begin their Level 1 Apprenticeship training at a college or training centre, through co-op, will be presented.

These Accelerated Apprenticeship opportunities include:  
Automotive Service Technician
Baker
Child and Youth Worker
Child Development Practitioner
Construction Craft Worker
Cook, Drywall Applications, Electrician, Floor Covering Installer
General Carpenter, Hairstyling and Cosmetology, Painter and Decorator, Plumber,
Refrigeration Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic

Students must register to attend in the guidance office.

JUNIOR BOYS SOCCER

In Junior Boys Soccer action, Dante played UTS on Monday at home. Dante won 6-0, Dante played a well skilled game, two goals were scored by Nicholas Rosario. Dylan Palma, Vito Copertino, Tommy De Souza, and Kevin Ferreira all score one a piece. Finally, Jason Alvarado and Luis Valenga shared a clean sheet for Dante. Dante's coaching staff would like to thank all the boys on the soccer team for well played game. A reminder to the junior boys of their practice today after-school at the main campus. Our next game is an away on Thursday October 9 against Michael Power.
