HERITAGE FAIR

The Department of Canadian & World Studies would like to congratulate all Grade 10 students who participated in the Heritage Fair which was held yesterday.

The top three awards were awarded to:
3rd place: Canadian & Immigration created by Cristian, Juan, Nicholas and Blessing,
2nd place: Canada & Space: Kathleen, Melissa, Daniela and Sophy and finally,
1st place: Canada & the Cold War: Justin, Nico, Virna and Natalie.

Thank you to all teachers and administration for joining us in tonight's Dante Arts Spring Showcase.

Thank you to Ms. Dimza, Mr. Labriola, Ms. Reedy, Ms. Pikula and Mr. Spedaliere for their limitless creativity, dedication and hard work towards this event, in the midst of such a busy, yet rewarding month.

We definitely had a great time and live show, full of energy and laughter that culminated in bringing together the community of parents, staff and students in the Cafeteria for the mesmerizing Artwork display!

GIRLS SOFTBALL

Yesterday Dante's Varsity Girls Softball Team travelled to Pope John Paul II for their first round playoff game. After a very slow start and falling behind 7-0 the team rallied in the late innings to win 16-10. They now take on the #1 ranked Bishop Allen on Thursday.

BOYS BASEBALL

The season came to an end last night with the Dante Boys Baseball team losing a very close game to Archbishop Romero. A solid team effort was given by all in the shocking 4-3 loss which capped off a season full of emotional highs and lows. Highlights from the playoff game included an excellent pitching start from Chris Ferris and a multiple-hit game by Josh Neville. The coaching staff would like to also thank graduating students Kyle Coelho and Peter Romano for 4 fun years of commitment to the team.

On Your Marks ..... Get Set.....

What a fantastic start for the long weekend the track and field team had last Thursday and Friday. Our team was able to win many races, and many athletes placed in the top 10 for their individual events. The team as whole experienced so much growth over the span of just a few weeks and it will be amazing to see what you can do next year.

A special congratulation also goes to Bryan Sanchez as he continues to train for his competition against the best Javelin throwers in Toronto this week.

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER

In Girls Soccer Action yesterday, the Dante Girls played St. Joseph's College team to a 2:2 tie, our goals were scored by Alessia Aribitrio and Nicole Cabral. The girls played an amazing final game of the season. Special thanks to the whole team for playing a fanastic game. The coaches wish the girls all the best in their future endeavors.

The Boys Baseball team played a close game yesterday against Johnson, but was beaten in the last inning with the bases loaded by a score of 8 - 5. Highlights included a 2 hit game by both Josh Neville and Peter Romano with other key hits coming from Kyle Coelho and Chris Ferris. Dante was kept in the game until the end with great relief pitching from Jomar Carvajal.

Today concludes Dante's annual Stop the Stigma Week. We have shared with you the importance of removing the stigma surrounding mental illness, informed you of the signs and symptoms of various mood disorders, and provided you with information about where you can go to seek the help you need or how to help a friend or loved one. We invite all staff and students in the Dante Family to reach out to those who may be suffering from a mental illness. We are at a crossroads; let us take the road that will lead us to becoming an even more caring and compassionate community.

What is Suicide?

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 15 to 24. Individuals suffering from a depressive illness carry out 80% of these deaths. Suicide should never be an option. There are a number of places and people we can turn to for help.

Students should not be afraid or embarrassed to seek out help or to talk to any of the caring adults in our school, your parents, or any other trustworthy person in their life. If you're at a crossroads ....reach out to get the help and support you need. There is always a way out. Suicide is not the answer.

Please visit the information booth featuring suicide during all three lunches in the cafeteria or play a game to test your knowledge of mental illness...come out and win a prize!

Highlights included an important hit by Michael Raposo and a hard-fought game behind the plate by Bruno Araujo. The next game will be on Monday against Redmond. Go Dante!!

STOP THE STIGMA TEAM

A message from your Stop the Stigma team at Dante.......

What is depression?

Depression is more than feeling sad or grief after a loss. Depression affects your thought, feelings, physical health and behaviors 1 in every 10 Canadians suffers from depression. Do you feel a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy? Do you have feelings of persistent sadness, restlessness, or worthlessness? Have you experienced anxiety, lethargy, or changes in appetite or weight loss or gain? Don't be afraid to talk about these feelings with someone and seek the necessary help. 

Today in the cafeteria during all three lunches, visit information booths and play fun and informative games for prizes to learn more about depression. 

Or join Mr.Quaglia during lunch C in the chapel for a guided meditation session. Meditation is often used as an alternative treatment that often helps people dealing with anxiety to relax their minds and bodies. Staff and students are welcome!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR STOP THE STIGMA TEAM AT DANTE......

What is a mood disorder?

A mood disorder is a feeling or sense of loss of control of our emotions in which we experience distress, varying from anxiety to depression. Mood disorders are very common, affecting 1 in 5 young people with symptoms generally appearing between the ages of 14 and 15. When diagnosed early, there is nearly a 100% change of recovery. Today in the cafeteria during all three lunches, visit information booths, play fun and informative games for prizes or speak with our local public health nurses about mood disorders. Melissa Corcoran from CAMH will also be there to share her story about mental illness or to answer any questions you may have.

GRADE SPIRIT DAYS

Grade Spirit Days are coming up! 

Next Wednesday May 8, is GRADE 10 PATTERN DAY! Only  Grade 10 students are permitted to wear a clearly patterned shirt with their uniform pants. A pattern means polka dots, stripes, shapes or plaid! Students that do not wear a clearly patterned shirt will be dealt with by Administration.

Grade 11's your Shoe Spirit Day is Wednesday May 15! ONLY Grade 11 students will be allowed to wear shoes that are not black. Grade 11 students are still expected to wear uniform, but will be permitted to wear coloured shoes.

Grade 12 your GRAD Week is coming up! May 21-23 only Grade 12 students will be permitted to participate in Tuckle Buckle, Plaid Day and the Water Pong Tournament!

CASUAL DAY

Hey Dante!

Today is Casual Day to support the Sears Festival and the Athletics. Your Casual Day passes cannot be used on this day, because it is not a regular Casual Day. This is just a day to support the Drama Department and the Athletic Department.The fee of this Casual Day will be $2.00. We will be collecting the money first period today. Remember, you cannot use your regular casual day pass on this day because this is just an additional Casual Day. The envelopes are in the teachers mailboxes.
