THE DIEPPER RAID

Canada's experiences in War have been marked by great triumphs but also by harsh setback. The Dieppe Raid during the Second World War was one of the darkest chapter in Canada's military history. The Dieppe Raid, code-name "operation jubilee" saw more than 6,000 men come ashore at 5 different points along a 16 kilometre long stretch coastile to attack Dieppe. The men who participated paid a great price in the Dieppe Raid. From the 4,963 canadians that went under, only 2,200 canadians returned home but very badly wounded. 1942 was one of the darkest periods of the second world war. But the fact that the Allies came ashore in occupied France, gave the French hope and the Dieppe Raid let them know that they have not been forgotten. As remembrance day comes near we have written a poem to salute every soldier in the wars that have happened or are happening now:

Blood, Sweat, tears come down
Love ones lost or never been found
Hopes shatter and dreams collide
when you see what military really is inside
As men get ready for the war not knowing
they wont see their families any more
Goodbyes go out to those who've gone away
Hoping you'll see them again some day
Afraid to sleep, hoping its all a dream
Sitting in the trenches tryin to block out all the screams

When the silent has come and the boom has disappeared
The whisper of wind picks up in the field
As they fought for us with all their might
We stand for the soldiers who went out to fight

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL

Coach Blake and Coach Griffith would like to give shout outs to the Junior Girls Basketball team for their play off win yesterday against O'Connor!!!  Whooo Hooo!!!!  With a final score of  27-34, the girls played with tremendous vigor and agility in all four periods of the game!!!  Unbelievable triumph last night with Princess Obanor, Gimena Ayala, Mikayla James and Luana Reis who scored great baskets!!  Congratulations girls!  Dante, lets give a big round of applause to our team now and when we see them in the halls today!!!  Lastly, team, there is practice at Beatrice today at 3 pm.  See you then!!!

Thank you!!!!

SOUTH AFRICAN WAR

The South African War started in 1899 and ended in 1902. When the South African War erupted, it quickly requested military assistance from members of the Commonwealth. Many Canadians volunteered for the conflict while offering military equipment, as well as arranging transportation to South Africa. In total, more than 7,000 Canadians would volunteer for service during the conflict. Great courage was evident throughout the South African War and five Canadians earned the highest award for military valour, the Victoria Cross. Approximately 280 Canadians lost their lives and more than 250 were wounded. The skill, courage and sacrifice demonstrated by those Canadians, both men and women, so long ago would be seen time and again in years to come. Today and always, please learn about the sacrifices and achievements made by those who have served - and continue to serve - during times of war and peace.

The Dante Community will always remember you.

POPPY CAMPAIGN

POPPY CAMPAIGN

The Department of Canadian & World Studies is set to begin the Poppy Campaign at Dante. The Poppy Campaign will begin on Monday, November 5 to Thursday, November 8, 2012.

How much should you give?

We suggest that you give according to the dictates of your conscience. As with most things, the cost of all benefits the Poppy Fund provides for our veterans continues to rise, therefore, it takes more money to do the same job.

When you give to the Poppy Campaign, you are remembering the sacrifices of the war dead but are also helping the living and the dependants of those who have served our country.

Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion's most important programs. The money raised from poppy sales provides direct assistance for ex-service people in financial distress, as well as funding for medical appliances and research, home services, care facilities, and numerous other purposes.

Thank you for supporting the Poppy Campaign!
 L. Tonelli

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day

Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians join together to celebrate Veterans’ Week. During this week, hundreds of commemorative ceremonies and events will take place across the country to recognize the achievements of our Veterans and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Let us begin by remembering an important battle from WWI.
We would like to commemorate the soldiers who were part of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917.  The hard fought battle started at 5:30 am on April 9, Easter Monday, and lasted four days. On the battlefield, Canadian soldiers proved their bravery, creativity, devotion and exceptional military skill.  After the Canadians captured the ridge, the hardest point being kept by the Germans, Canadians won a reputation as one of the toughest and best fighting soldiers in the world. This battle helped Canada become a nation – one devoted to the pursuit of freedom. We would like to thank these soldiers who served our country and risked their lives for peace and to help ensure we have freedom to enjoy today.
Dear Dante, make remembrance more than something you feel. Make it something you do.

REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLY

Students who are interested in participating in the Remembrance Day Assembly are asked to attend a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, November 7 after school in the Auditorium for responsibilities. Students must also be available for a full rehearsal on Thursday, November 8.
