DEAF AND HEARING AWARENESS MONTH

May is Deaf and Hearing Awareness Month and here's another interesting bit from the deaf community.....

Did you know the Incredible Hulk was deaf? Well not really, but the actor who played him is. His name is Lou Farrigno. He's an actor, fitness trainer and retired professional bodybuilder. As an actor, he's best known for his role as the Hulk. He also appeared in Sinbad of the Seven Seas, Hercules and as himself in the King of Queens and the movie I Love You Man. He had many ear infections as a baby which caused him to lose about 80% of his hearing. Despite his hearing loss, Farrigno says he was always determined to be successful. He was not ashamed of his hearing loss. In fact, when he's working on a new movie set, it's the first thing he tells people because he wants to be able to communicate effectively and get the job done. Too bad he was fired from The Apprentice this season!!!!!!!!!

DEAF AWARENESS MONTH

Good Morning Dante!

In keeping with May being Deaf and Hearing Awareness month, here's another story about a famous person who was deaf.

William Hoy was the first deaf Major League Baseball Player. People gave him the nickname "Dummy" Hoy because he couldn't hear. He played baseball for 17 years, from 1886 to 1903. Hoy played 1,784 games and had a .292 average. He couldn't hear the umpire when he called STRIKE OR BALL, so he invented hand signals for them, which baseball players, hearing and deaf, still use today, Gallaudet University, a university for the Deaf in Washington, D.C., has dedicated a baseball field in his name: "Hoy Field". It seems he wasn't so dumb after all.............

Don't forget, Swag Hands meets today after school in Room 317. Come and see what it's all about!

Thanks
Ms. Stock

DEAF AND HEARING AWARENESS MONTH

Hey Dante,

As you know by now, May is Deaf and Hearing Awareness Month and here’s a story of a famous athlete who is deaf.

Jim Kyte was a deaf NHL player in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He was famous because he was the only player in National Hockey League history to be legally deaf. He wore special hearing aids and a customized helmet with special flaps covering his ears to protect the hearing aids during games. He later opened his own summer hockey school for deaf and hard of hearing kids in Toronto, and it is still open today. In 598 NHL games, Jim only scored 66 points but don’t forget, he was a defenseman.. He learned sign language even though it wasn’t necessary for him to communicate. Jim Kyte was twice nominated for the Masterton Trophy for dedication to the game of hockey. He should have won it!

Just a reminder that Swag Hands will meet again next Tuesday after school!

Thanks
Ms. Florio
