Today, December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.

Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.

As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society.

It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence.

And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Thank you,
The Department of Canadian
and World Studies

Last week Friday, our Varsity boys' soccer team travelled to the Scarborough Soccer Centre and participated in an indoor six aside Marc Garneau tournament. Dante had participated in the past and won the championship two years in a row. This was Dante's third appearance in five years and they were looking to win their third championship. In the round robin Dante outscored their opponents 10 to 1. Dante won against Mowat 2-0; won against Danforth Tech 2-0; won against Leacock 4-0 and held off McLuhan with their fourth win 2-1. Dante finished first in their division and now had to face Chaminade in the semi-finals. Chaminade scored first but our players would not give up and evened the score. However, with 5 seconds left on the clock, Chaminade scored and our boys lost the game 2-1. Mr. Matiitchik and Mr. Turco would like to congratulate all the boys for their hard work commitment and fun time.

Mr. Matiitchik
