It is said that the ‘first’ European explorer to encounter Costa Rica was Christopher Columbus during his fourth and final voyage to the “New World.” Costa Ricans have set aside one quarter of their land as protected areas and national parks. Within this small nation it is found an astounding five percent of the world's biodiversity represented by more than 800 species of ferns, 1,000 of orchids, 2,000 kinds of trees, and 200 species of mammals. The literacy rate in Costa Rica is 97%. Public education is guaranteed in the constitution. Primary education is obligatory, and both preschool and high school are free. Thanks Mr. Flores
