NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Today, December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.

Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.

As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society.

It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence.

And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Thank you,
The Department of Canadian
and World Studies

VARSITY BOYS' SOCCER

Last week Friday, our Varsity boys' soccer team travelled to the Scarborough Soccer Centre and participated in an indoor six aside Marc Garneau tournament. Dante had participated in the past and won the championship two years in a row. This was Dante's third appearance in five years and they were looking to win their third championship. In the round robin Dante outscored their opponents 10 to 1. Dante won against Mowat 2-0; won against Danforth Tech 2-0; won against Leacock 4-0 and held off McLuhan with their fourth win 2-1. Dante finished first in their division and now had to face Chaminade in the semi-finals. Chaminade scored first but our players would not give up and evened the score. However, with 5 seconds left on the clock, Chaminade scored and our boys lost the game 2-1. Mr. Matiitchik and Mr. Turco would like to congratulate all the boys for their hard work commitment and fun time.

Thanks

VOW OF SILENCE

Around the world,

children are silenced

they are denied the right to education,

forced to work as child labourers,

or made sick because the water they drink

is contaminated with bacteria.

Take the time to learn more about the lives behind these issues,
and the facts become as real as they are unbelievable.

Today, November 30, 2011 students and staff at Dante are Taking a Vow of Silence to raise awareness about the difficult life of these children.

You can support this effort by pledging a loony or a toonie to the Vow of Silence. Sponsor your friends, classmates or teachers for this worthy cause.

JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL

Re: Upper Canada College Tournament Results

The Junior Boys Basketball Team came away with a second place finish at last weekend’s Upper Canada College Tournament. Led by the solid play of DeRico Smith the team was able to win all their games but the final game. Chunnel Philips poured in point after point in the initial games but was not able to maintain the barrage for the final. In the semi final game the coaches made some on the fly adjustments to grind out the victory to send the juniors to the final game against Senator O'Connor. Basketball begins for real this Tuesday for both the junior and senior teams. Good luck for the season boys!!

POPPY CAMPAIGN

The Department of History is set to begin the Poppy Campaign at Dante. The Poppy Campaign will begin on Monday, November 7 to Thursday, November 10, 2011

How much should you give?

We suggest that you give according to the dictates of your conscience. As with most things, the cost of all benefits the Poppy Fund provides for our veterans continues to rise, therefore, it takes more money to do the same job.

When you give to the Poppy Campaign, you are remembering the sacrifices of the war dead but are also helping the living and the dependants of those who have served our country.

Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion's most important programs. The money raised from poppy sales provides direct assistance for ex-service people in financial distress, as well as funding for medical appliances and research, home services, care facilities, and numerous other purposes.

Thank you for supporting the Poppy Campaign!

JUNIOR BOYS' SOCCER

The undefeated Jr. Boys' soccer team travelled to the Hangar yesterday to play their semi-final match against the powerful Chaminade team. Dante started playing with determination and within the first 20 minutes of the first half took control of the game and lead 1-0. Chaminade would not give up and eventually tied the game before the first half ended. With the game tied 1-1, Dante was trying to take the lead but with some bad bounces gave up the lead. The team now trailed 2-1. With very little time remaining, the players tried tying the game but could not. Dante finished the season losing the game 2-1. Scoring, with his head, was Jason Rites. The coaches Aldea, Matiitchick, and Turco would like to thank the students for a very exciting season and for their good behaviour on the field.

The following students: Martin Moreno; Alex Molina; Gianluca Bellissimo; and Sergio Chazi must see Mr. Matiitchick today after the morning announcements.

SENIOR AND JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL

Congratulations to the Senior and Junior Girls Basketball Game

The Seniors girls won a very tough game versus Percy Johnson last night. After losing their first two games by only one point each, the Seniors girls got that elusive first win. The seniors played hard man to man defence the first half and managed to pull out to a big lead after the half and didn't look back. The final score was 40 to 32.

The Junior girls won their second of the season and stand at 2-0. The juniors started on a 10-2 to pull out ahead and didn't look back. A exciting moment of the game was when Chantel Medeiros hit a half-court shot to end the first half. The crowd went wild. The final score was 40 to 29.

Great job to all the members of the Dante Basketball program. Both teams showed great effort and poise throughout the game. Good luck girls.
