VARSITY BOYS' SOCCER

DATE: December 14, 2009

TEACHER'S NAME: Mr. Turco

SUBJECT: VARSITY BOYS' SOCCER

Last week Friday our varsity boys' soccer team participated in the Marc Garneau Champions' Cup with fifteen other schools. This is the second year in the row that Dante entered the tournament. Dante took the round robin games with ease and came first in their division by outscoring their opponents 19 goals to only giving up 2 goals. The first game Dante won 4-0 against Marshall McLuhan. In the second game Dante won 5-1 against Riverdale. In the third game Dante won 6-0 against Marc Garneau and in the final game of the round robin Dante won 4-1 against Danforth Tech. In the quarter final game Dante won 4-1 and in the semi-final game Dante continued with a strong game to win 3-0. The only game that Dante had some trouble was the final game against Jean Vanier but Hayden Clark scored to tie the game with only 2 minutes left. It was now down to a shoot out and each team went through their five shooters but Dante came out victorious with the tenth shooter Raemon Mendoza scoring the game winner. Dante won the championship for the second year in a row. The coaches Turco, Matiitchik, Festa, and Martinuzzi would like to congratulate the following players: Domenico Rosso, Abiel Rodriguez, Daniel Clemente, Brandon Gomes, Lamar Powel, Raemon Mendoza, Derrick Amankwa, Reggie Amankwa, Pedro Santos, Hayden Clark, Sergio Marin, Steven Pereira, and Pedro Dias for their outstanding commitment and hard work in all the games won. If you see any of the above mentioned students, please congratulate them for winning their second championship in three years.

THREE CENT CHALLENGE

DATE: December 4, 2009

From Ms Sousa's class - By now all teachers have received a water bottle to participate in the three cent challenge. If all of the staff and students bring in just three cents we can buy a piglet or some bunnies for worldvision. By now, the goat that we gave last year has produced up to 250 litres of milk and it may have also produced offspring! This sustainable gift makes a huge difference to an impoverished community in Africa, but we need your three cents to reach our goal!
We would like to thank the classes who have already brought in their pennies and a special thanks and God Bless goes out to Christopher Gil and Nelson Mota in Ms Pilaf's class who each brought in an entire bottle of pennies!

Let's keep those pennies rolling in Dante!
Thanks

What a spectacular season. Ms. Pescador and Mr. Finnison would like to congratulate the Junior Girls Basketball team for a competitive and fun season. Dante should be proud of their team and the commitment they showed on and off the court.

Last nights semi final game was a nail biter. The score was always within 2 points. Our fouls got us in trouble and in over time with no time on the clock and the other team with foul shot in their favour…Dante is finally defeated.

Dante ends their season arguably in third place. Their coaches are so very proud of each an every one of their players….

JUNIOR BOYS' SOCCER

Date: Nov 4/09
Teacher’s Name: MR. TURCO
Subject: JR. BOYS' SOCCER

WE ARE THE CHAMPS!!! That is right. Our Jr. Boys' soccer team traveled yesterday to the Hangar and played their championship game against a very technical team Newman. The team worked hard and opened the scoring in the first half with Raemon Mendoza sliding the ball in the corner from a nice cross by Reggie Amankwa. Our boys tried to move ahead by two goals but were not lucky so Newman bounced back to tie the game before the first half was over. In the second half, Dante had some chances to seal the victory but could not score the go ahead goal. Both teams were deadlock at one goal apiece and both teams had to play sudden death for the victory. Dante stormed out in the first extra 10 min. half and pulled away with another goal by Raemon Mendoza. As soon as the referee blew his whistle the coaches new it was game over and Dante won their 5th T.D.C.A.A. championship in seven years. The coaches Aldea, Turco, Festa, Matitchik and assistant Martinuzzi would like to congratulate the entire team for a fantastic season. Not only did they come second in the St. Jean de Brebuef tournament they also brought home the T.D.C.A.A. banner. Each player also received a medal for their efforts. If you see the players in the hall, do congratulate them for an outstanding season.

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL

DATE: Nov 4, 2009

A special congratulations goes to the Dante Junior Girls Basketball Program. After a decisive win over Monsignor Johnson 47 to 29, the girls capped off a perfect season finishing 8-0 and enter the playoffs as the first place team in the west. The girls receive a bye in the first round and play next Thursday.
Game Recap.
The first quarter was very close with both teams exchanging baskets easily. Once our defence settled down, the girls were able to clog the middle and rotate quickly enough on the perimeter to get many turnovers and quick transition points. Special mention to Sonia and Chervonne who were the point leaders, as well as Chantel and Mila who play great defence.
Way to go Girls!
Ms.Pescador and Mr.Finnison

What is 2^2+1 equal to? No, this is not a math test but if you answered 5, then you are correct. Five is the number of times the Jr. Boys' soccer team has advanced to the T.D.C.C.A finals within the last seven years. If you guessed that the team won, then you are correct again. Dante had to fight back as they were behind 1-0 early in the first half of their semi-final game against McLuhan last week Thursday. However, before the first half was over, Jacob Orellana scored from a corner kick and both teams were deadlocked 1-1. During the first 5 minutes of the second half Dante pulled ahead 2-1 and never looked back. Scoring the eventual winning goal was Christian Samaniego with a header. The coaches would like to congratulate the team from their come from behind win against a very hard working team McLuhan.

The team now moves on to the T.D.C.C.A. final championship game against Newman. This game is played tomorrow Tuesday Nov. 3 at the Hangar. Come out and cheer for our team. The players are reminded of this very important game tomorrow.

Huge congratulations to the Dante Junior Girls Basketball Team. They improved their perfect record to 5-0 with a spectacular 32 - 31 over annual powerhouse Michael Power last Thursday. Dante had not beaten Micheal Power in over 8 years according to a few Power fans. The game was a nail–biter until the dying second. With only 1 minute left in the 4th and up by one we managed to pull out spectacular victory. There was outstanding teamwork throughout the closely contested match. Our big three of Sonia, Mitta, and Chervon shown true determination and confidence in the last minutes of play. A special mention goes out to Mila whose defensive presence was the backbone on a lot of our zone sets. The Girls have two more games this week and intend to keep their perfect season alive.
